One of my favourite dishes is their vegetarian Lor Mee which has a generous serving of ingredients!

We have tried vegetarian chicken rice from a few stalls and this ("Vegetarian Fragrance Rice") is the best! The rice is cooked with ginger juice and the ingredients include vegetarian chicken drumstick, cucumbers and Chinese parsley. Two slices of vegetarian duck meat (placed besides the cucmbers) are also included.

Dragon Boat Festival 2009

Dragon Boat Festival (端午节) is a festival celebrated by many Chinese on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month to commemorate Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and political figure who lived in the 3rd century B.C. The festival falls on 28 May (Thursday) this year. To celebrate the festival, the Chinese prepare and eat rice dumplings (粽子) which are made of glutinous rice and fillings (such as braised pork, chestnuts and dried shiitake mushrooms) wrapped in bamboo leaves. To cook the rice dumplings, wood stoves are used.

Cooking Rice Dumplings

There are a variety of rice dumplings available in the market. The most common savoury ones include braised pork rice dumplings and Nonya rice dumplings. Besides these rice dumplings with meat fillings, there are also vegetarian ones. I have just tried vegetarian braised meat rice dumplings and vegetarian Nonya rice dumplings and they both taste as good as those with meat fillings.

Qing Ming Festival

Qing Ming Festival (清明节) which is usually known as the Tomb/Grave Sweeping Day in English, falls on 4th April (or the 9th day of the 3rd lunar month) this year. It is another Chinese festival celebrated by many Chinese, especially Taoists and Buddhists to remember their ancestors. Although the festival falls on 4th April 2009, many Chinese started paying respect to their ancestors at cemeteries or columbaria from 20th March. (i.e. the Chinese celebrate the festival from 20th March till 4th April).

Every year, we visit Mount Vernon Columbarium to pay respect to my ancestors.

Notice displayed at the Columbarium during Qing Ming Festival

As only vegetarian food can be offered, my chef prepare some vegetarian dishes like vegetarian noodles, vegetarian meat and vegetarian dumplings (kuehs) and also bought some vegetarian BBQ meat (char siew) buns.
